Behind the loud scenes of the multi-colored paintings, in this series hides sensitive topics which also have a specific effect on Sagna’s own concept of herself, as a woman and an artist. Sagna questions the identity of a multi-cultural, often black, woman. Sagna’s art discusses and broaches issues of prejudices, everyday racism, reactions, different points of view, whether from the own eye or the eyes of others, intimacy and self-representation.
All these topics form to create a cosmic world where the female body is the epicenter. Instead of generic model figures, she concentrates on strong, self-confident women who tirelessly work against western beauty standards.
Here Instagram serves as a main source of inspiration for Sagna’s acrylic and oil paintings. She purposely searches for selfies and self-portraiture of a wide variety of women, often posing in new and interesting ways. Sometimes combining pictures, Sagna creates her own individuality, a person many can find and see themselves in.
Tapping into the ephemeral and constantly changing medial elements of our digital age, Sagna finds repurpose, anchoring them into traditional painting. She bridges the worlds of media and advertisement in the 21st century and a traditional art form, already being practiced for centuries.
